How an edge reader-controller changes door wiring, and what to check before reusing existing readers on RC-04 PowerNet.

How is this different from running everything back to a panel?

The reader and the controller sit together at the opening, so traditional panel wiring shrinks. Three things get more attention in exchange: secure-side lock-control design, PoE and network resilience, and tamper protection at a device that now sits where the public can reach it. Credential technology, keypad or non-keypad hardware and REX devices are chosen as one set.

Do we pick the credential technology before or after the hardware?

Together. Credential choice, the reader-controller form factor and the REX and door-contact hardware are selected as one decision, because a keypad model, a card-only model and the credential population all constrain each other. Start from the credentials already in circulation and the ones you plan to issue, then settle the form factor opening by opening.

Do we need a network drop at every door?

Yes. With RC-04 PowerNet the intelligence is at the opening, so each controlled door needs its own network path and a share of the switch PoE budget instead of a home run to a panel room. Count those ports and that budget early, along with lock power, because the switch becomes the equipment every door depends on.

Where does the lock relay belong?

On the secure side of the opening. Because the reader-controller sits at the door itself, the relay that releases the lock is designed onto the protected side, and door contact, request-to-exit and supervised input requirements are laid out with it. Confirm the secure-side relay strategy on the drawings before rough-in, since correcting it later means opening finished walls.

Can we keep the readers we already have and connect them through IP-Bridge?

Sometimes, and it is reviewed rather than assumed. IP-Bridge and legacy options carry migration limits, so existing reader models, their wiring and their credential formats go on the list for a current compatibility review before anyone counts them as reusable. Where reuse does not hold up, those openings are quoted as reader-controller replacements from the start.

Do these devices become our IT group’s responsibility after handoff?

Ownership is assigned in the handoff package rather than left to habit, and because each RC-04 is a networked device at a door, firmware, user accounts and remote access sit naturally with whoever owns the switches. The package covers administrator training, backup, documentation and maintenance, and current licenses, subscriptions, firmware and integrations are reviewed with that group.
