Barrier, traffic-control and safety components for controlled vehicle entrances where throughput and entrapment risk matter as much as credentials.

What this product family does
A complete vehicle-control design coordinates the operator, barrier or gate, loops/detection, photo eyes and edges, traffic signals, bollards or spikes where appropriate, signage, emergency access and pedestrian routing. Safety devices are not optional accessories to be chosen after the operator.
Products and decisions
| Product area | What it includes | Selection guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle detection | Presence, safety and exit loop functions or approved alternatives | Create a loop/detector plan around actual lane geometry and pavement construction |
| Entrapment protection | Monitored photo eyes and edges as required by the operator and gate layout | Identify every entrapment zone and test fault response during commissioning |
| Traffic control | Barrier arms, signals and directional controls | Model stacking, tailgating, lane reversals and peak traffic |
| Emergency operation | Fire department access, manual release and backup power | Coordinate with owner, fire authority and site emergency plan |
Questions to answer before quoting
- Separate pedestrians from automated gate travel
- Document UL 325 device locations and test results
- Confirm snow, drainage, pavement and plow conditions
- Schedule preventive maintenance for the full gate—not only the operator
- Who owns administration, backups, updates and recurring services?
- What must continue working during network, internet or power failure?
- Which opening, egress, accessibility and life-safety requirements apply?
- What training, documentation and preventive maintenance are required?

How to compare and specify this product family
For DoorKing Traffic Control and Gate Safety Systems, the right model and architecture depend on the site, existing infrastructure and operating policy. A proposal should clearly document the following vehicle gate and traffic-control system decisions before equipment is ordered:
- Gate type, weight, length and travel
- Daily cycles and peak traffic
- Monitored entrapment-protection devices
- Vehicle loops, photo eyes and safety edges
- Fire-department and emergency access
- Power, backup operation and preventive maintenance
Installation, testing and handoff
A site review verifies gate construction, travel, wind exposure, traffic flow, power and the required monitored safety devices before an operator is chosen. The final scope should identify controls, loops, photo eyes, edges, access-control interfaces, emergency operation and signage. Commissioning includes force and safety-device tests, access tests, operator limits, user training and a maintenance schedule. Existing gates may require mechanical correction before automation can be installed safely.
Frequently asked questions
Questions about vehicle entrances where throughput, entrapment protection and emergency access matter as much as who holds a credential.
Our loops already detect vehicles. Why are photo eyes and edges still in the scope?
Because they do different jobs. Loops provide presence, safety and exit detection for vehicles in the lane, while monitored photo eyes and edges provide entrapment protection for what a loop cannot see. The operator and gate layout determine how many of each apply. Every entrapment zone is identified during design, and fault response is tested at commissioning.
Will the existing driveway take saw-cut loops?
That depends on the pavement itself. A loop/detector plan is built around actual lane geometry and pavement construction, so cracked, patched or thin paving changes where loops can be cut and whether they survive. Snow, drainage, pavement and plow conditions are confirmed in the same review, because a plow blade and a saw cut share one surface.
At what point does a lane need a barrier arm rather than just a gate?
When peak throughput, not credential checking, becomes the constraint. Barrier arms, signals and directional controls form the traffic-control layer, and they are selected after modeling stacking, tailgating, lane reversals and peak traffic at that entrance. A gate that must fully cycle for every vehicle is a different design from a lane held by a barrier.
Where do people on foot go if the vehicle gate is automated?
On a route of their own. The design has to separate pedestrians from automated gate travel, which means a walking path or pedestrian opening that does not cross the gate’s swing or slide zone. Signage and pedestrian routing belong in the scope rather than in a later change order. Walk the route at night and in bad weather before commissioning closes.
How does the fire department get through a locked vehicle entrance?
By whatever method the owner, the fire authority and the site emergency plan agree on in advance. Fire department access, manual release and backup power are coordinated together, so the release location and the backup power source are both documented and both tested. Put the agreed method in the as-built package instead of leaving it with one technician.
How do we know the entrapment protection actually works when we accept the job?
By watching it tested. Every entrapment zone is identified, each device is exercised including its fault response, and UL 325 device locations and test results are written into the record. Force and safety-device tests, access tests and operator limits belong in the same commissioning package, along with the maintenance schedule for the whole gate.
