What this product family does

ButterflyMX lists 8-inch and 12-inch, surface and recessed intercom configurations. The platform supports video calling, resident/tenant directories, visitor passes, PIN access and compatible fob/card use. The manufacturer publishes IP65 environmental protection for current video-intercom hardware; final mounting, weather sealing and vandal exposure still require a site survey.

Products and decisions

Product area What it includes Selection guidance
8-inch vs. 12-inch Screen size, directory experience and available wall area Review accessibility, approach, visibility and the number of directory entries
Surface vs. recessed Surface installation reduces wall excavation; recessed can provide a different finished profile Survey wall depth, backbox, waterproofing, cable entry and historic-finish constraints
Calling Smartphone video plus supported telephone workflows Confirm resident adoption, fallback calling and property support procedures
Entry methods Mobile app, visitor passes, PIN and supported credentials Set policy for temporary access, photos/logs, delivery and privacy

Questions to answer before quoting

  • Building type and number of tenants
  • Entrance dimensions, ADA reach and weather exposure
  • Internet, power, lock and fire-release requirements
  • Annual platform fee, onboarding and property-management workflow
  • Who owns administration, backups, updates and recurring services?
  • What must continue working during network, internet or power failure?
  • Which opening, egress, accessibility and life-safety requirements apply?

How to compare and specify this product family

For ButterflyMX Video Intercom Models, the right model and architecture depend on the site, existing infrastructure and operating policy. A proposal should clearly document the following video-surveillance system decisions before equipment is ordered:

  • Scene purpose and required pixels on target
  • Lens, mounting height, WDR, IR and low-light needs
  • Analytics supported by the selected camera and VMS
  • Bandwidth, PoE and network segmentation
  • Retention, storage throughput and export workflow
  • User roles, cybersecurity, health monitoring and support

Installation, testing and handoff

Design starts with the evidence or operational result required at each scene—not megapixels alone. We document fields of view, identification targets, lighting, camera placement, network load, recording profiles and retention assumptions. Commissioning covers focus, exposure, time synchronization, analytics calibration, user permissions, mobile or remote access, export testing and health alerts. Final documentation records device names, locations, addressing, retention settings and administrator procedures without publishing private credentials.

Frequently asked questions

Questions property managers ask about ButterflyMX panel size, mounting, entry methods and what happens at the entrance door.

How do we choose between the 8-inch and 12-inch panel?

By the directory and the wall you have. This page pairs 8-inch and 12-inch selection with accessibility, approach, visibility and the number of directory entries, so a long tenant list with a wide approach points one way and a narrow vestibule points the other. Measure entrance dimensions and ADA reach before the model is fixed, because mounting height constrains both.

Surface or recessed: which mount should we specify?

The wall condition decides it. ButterflyMX lists surface and recessed intercom configurations, and the difference shows up in both the work and the finish: surface installation reduces wall excavation, while recessed can provide a different finished profile. A survey of wall depth, backbox, waterproofing, cable entry and historic-finish constraints settles which configuration a given entrance can accept.

Is the panel rated for an exterior entrance?

The manufacturer publishes IP65 environmental protection for current video-intercom hardware, and the installation detail still has to earn it. Mounting, weather sealing and vandal exposure are surveyed at the actual entrance: runoff from the door head, a cable entry that can trap water, and how close a person can get to the panel. Weather exposure is recorded with the entrance dimensions in the survey notes.

What has to be coordinated with the lock and the fire alarm?

Door release, power and the fire-release path, designed with the opening rather than assumed from the panel, since internet, power, lock and fire-release requirements are on this page’s pre-quote list. The fire alarm interface and free egress are worked out with the fire alarm contractor and the local code official, so the entrance still opens by hand when the panel or its network is unavailable.

Will the fobs our residents carry still open the door?

Only if their technology is among the credentials the installed reader supports, since the platform describes compatible fob/card use rather than universal compatibility. Sample and read the existing fobs during the survey. Where they are not supported, decide whether to reissue credentials, lead with the mobile app and PIN access, or keep a separate reader at the entrance for the legacy population.

What about residents who will not use a smartphone app?

They are covered by the other entry methods, and the fallback is set during design. The platform lists smartphone video plus supported telephone workflows, while PIN access and visitor passes handle people and deliveries that are not on the app. Resident adoption, onboarding and the annual platform fee belong in the property-management conversation that runs beside hardware selection.
